November 9th, 2016 could have easily been the worst day of my life. The Democrats were defeated and years of progress were reversed. This, though, was not the worst day of my life. The worst day of my life was when I lost my Dad while moving my family out of our foreclosed home. I lost my Dad and my home in one month. That was also the month that I started my last year of college. In that final year, I received the best grades of my college career because I was motivated by my Dad who was so proud of me for being the first person in my immediate family to pursue a degree. This senseless tragedy in my life pushed me continue and make a better life for myself and the people around me. So when I woke up Wednesday morning I was not depressed; I was motivated. More motivated than I had ever been.
Things are bad right now. But we show our true selves when we are at our lowest point. My lowest point brought me motivation and I hope we as Democrats will do the same. We must show our true selves, we must be the party of the people. We must turn our anger and frustration into something that is entirely constructive. Our values and beliefs are winning ideas shared by most people, but we have to be better communicators. We have to win those tough upcoming elections, we have to educate and have critical conversations with those outside our social circles. And that is just the beginning. As always though, we must push forward.
I should probably introduce myself. My name is Kody Hart and I am the new 2nd Vice Chair. I am a millennial rural Democrat from Athens, Wisconsin. I work in marketing and have a B.A. in Mass Communications from UW- Eau Claire. If you haven’t already guessed, I am very motivated and very excited to get to work to grow our local party.
